SPOTLIGHT | ONF Hyojin ② “It's good to have two leaders because we can share the difficulties”
ONF who made their debut on August 2017 is a team who made a special career in a short span of time. They all went to the JTBC survival program "Mixnine" where two of their members made it to the debut group but the debut was eventually canceled. "I'm happy that we were able to come back as ONF soon." Hyojin who prepared to debut as second placer in "Mixnine" told the situation then in a relaxed manner. He says that he's embarassed everytime he speaks and filled the studio with his laughs, creating a relaxed environment.
Q: What do you mostly do when you get back to your dorms.
A: We all have free time individually. Though we have our own things to do, since we're in the same place, we often eat together or talk amongst ourselves. Personally I don't have things I do as a hobby, but lately I watch a lot of dramas or movies. I'm currently watching "The Light In Your Eyes." The drama gets sadder as it goes on, but I'm watching each episode as I exercise.
Q: You look like you're working out a lot. You don't look like you enjoyed working out on your reality show (On The Run).
A: I'm working out a lot lately. I really like eating at first so I gained a lot of weight. During Complete, I ate less and worked out. Mangwon market js just nearby our company, and there are lots of delicious food there. I like jjampong the most. I really love it. There are also other members aside from me who likes eating.
Q: Do you also cook at the dorm?
A: I can only cook ramyeon. I only eat a little, but when the members gather, we cook 6 packs of ramen and order chicken and pig trotters.
Q: You eat little, you say? (laughs)
A: Well, actually, we all eat a lot...
Q: ONF specially has two leaders, Hyojin and J-Us. On top of that, you are already friends even before you became trainees.
A: We fought a lot then. We both took on the leader roles even when we were trainees, and our thoughts didn't match. But when we debuted, we didn't fight that much. We talked a lot and matched our thoughts so we had less fights.
Q: When was your most recent fight?
A: We actually fought yesterday? It's been a really long time since we last fought, and I'm really surprised that you asked! J-US didn't hear what I said so we fought. We've fought many times over this in the past so I purposely gathered all the members to say it in one go, but J-US was the only one who didn't hear what I said. "Why are you the only one who didn't hear" "You're the only one who didn't hear" "The others all heard it!" Ah, it's really embarassing (laughs). Though things cleared up when we woke up the following day.
Q: Who among the members is good at apologizing?
A: I think it's me. I hate fights. There are times where trivial things can make you feel bad. I go to (the other member), point out that I made a mistake on a certain part and apologize. I also hate seeing the members becoming awkward towards each other after a fight. I often go to both sides and hear their stories. When I feel an awkward atmosphere after a fight, I can't do anything else. Lots of things come to my mind. I originally have lots of thoughts and worries.
Q: It's a good thing that there are two leaders for whatever fight happens right? (laughs)
A: When I was in "Mixnine" I had the experience of being a leader alone. I had lots of worries because I didn't know what the personalities of each members are and how will I match them. As we came to knew each other, I started to have a clue. It's different when there are two leaders. When you're a leader alone, it's hard to find someone whom you can confide to, but when the two of us are leaders, I can share my difficulties to J-Us and him to me. I prefer that we both are leaders rather than me alone. It's less difficult.
Q: Looks like the members tease you a lot from your reality show. (OTR)
A: I receive my members' teasing well. I don't get angry. I think I'm more serious than the other members. I'm unpredictable. There are times where I take a serious thing as a joke, and there are also times where I take jokes as a serious thing.
Q: You seem to have lots of charms that the fans haven't seen yet.
A: I may look nice, but I'm the type to say everything I want to say. I also nag a lot. I think I haven't shown that side of me yet. Also, Yuto's good at cleaning but I am too. The members don't mention me a lot (as someone who's good at cleaning). When I see E-Tion's mess, I keep telling him to clean up, but apparently the members don't know I often do that.
Q: Though you can't show your nagging, you can show your fans your cleaning (laughs)
A: I'm originally not the type to take charge over things. I'm very private and likes to keep things hidden. I have a tendency to not show myself. Since I took on idol as a job, that tendency is slowly going away.
Q: What's the most memorable moment from your debut until now?
A: Our debut showcase. I was really nervous during our fan showcase than the press showcase. They're people who came to see us, and they might be the same people who might not like us in the future. If we make a small mistake, I'm worried they might have thoughts like "Oh they're not that good?" I made a mistake because I was worrying too much then.
Q: Those fans from that moment gave you lots of strength now right?
A: It's really amusing. They say that when a lot of fans cheer for you, you'll gain strength. I didn't know what those words meant before we debut. When I experienced it personally, I felt it. We usually do difficult dances in the practice room, but when we perform it on stage in front of cheering fans it doesn't feel difficult.
Q: How would you introduce ONF to people who don't know you yet.
A: Can I introduce each member as animals? E-TION's eyes are sharp so he looks like a shark. J-US' eyes are round so it feels like you're looking at an owl. WYATT really likes working out, so he is a muscular gorilla. MK looks like a cat. U looks like an eagle. He has a strong gaze when he puts on a serious face which I like. LAUN's eyes are big so he looks like a frog. Not the frog that lives in the streams, but a cartoon character frog.
Q: I don't know if the members will like this (laughs) We heard Hyojin looks like the deer Bambi.
A: I think it's okay. It's okay. It's difficult to introduce our team. You have to know our team so in the future, I hope there would be lots of opportunities where I will be invited with the members!
